Off-Grid Life In A $4,500 Converted School Bus

Off-Grid Life In A $4,500 Converted School Bus Find more on: http://ift.tt/1nr27gs

The off-the-grid life can take many forms – a traditional home, an earthbag house and even an underground abode.

But what about a converted school bus? That’s the route that off-gridder Patrick Schmidt took when he bought a used school bus and then converted it into his own home on wheels – complete with a bed, a kitchen area, a restroom and solar panels.

Schmidt is this week’s guest on Off The Grid Radio, as he shares with us how he converted the bus into a home and also provides details of his journey across the country.

It’s an off-grid life like no other. Schmidt tells us:

  • Where he found his used bus, which cost $4,500.
  • Why he chose a bus instead of other forms of off-grid homes.
  • How he makes money off-grid while living on the road.
  • Which parts of America he enjoyed most on a recent 15,000-mile voyage.
  • How he repaired the bus when it died, simply by posting a picture of the engine on social media.
  • Why he chose not to put a television in the bus.

Schmidt left his job to buy the bus, and he shares with us all of the priceless benefits of escaping the rat race. If you’ve ever wanted to travel the country or live in a portable home, then you don’t want to miss this week’s show!

Have Fun While Honing Your Survival Skills

There is no better way to practice your survival skills than to practice these life saving skills while you are camping – anything from building a shelter to identifying edible plants.

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned survivalist, I believe in always staying on top of your game with these 5 survival skills which can literally save your life in a survival situation.

1. Building a Fire

(Image via)

(Image via)

Learning different methods of how to build a fire is important. The easiest way, of course, is to use matches or a lighter. It is important to remember, however, that you should never rely just on these 2 methods alone – your lighter could run out of fluid or your matches could get wet. Primitive methods are important for EVERYONE to learn. The following methods are great to practice while you are camping:

Ferro Rod – Check out this great video on different ferro rods you can use.

Hand Drill – Check out this video tutorial for step-by-step instructions.

Bow Drill – Check out this video tutorial for step-by-step instructions.

2. Building a Shelter

Learning how to build a shelter is another must-know skill for any survivalist. While you’re camping, you most likely will have a tent and a air mattress with warm blankets. However, one day you could be in these same surroundings without these luxuries therefore, building a shelter is a skill that you will need to learn to protect you from the elements and quite possibly – predators.

The following article, written by Ruth England (co-star of ‘Man, Woman, Wild’) gives detailed instructions and viable information on how to build different types of shelters.

3. Water Purification

(Image via)

(Image via)

Another must-have skill is water purification. Purifying water is so important. If it looks clean, purify it anyway. Water that has not been filtered or purified can lead to serious illness and sometimes death due to bacteria and other waterborne pathogens.

The following article, Wilderness Survival Tips: Water Purification, discusses the dangers that can arise from dehydration and drinking unpurified water. Also, you will learn different methods of how to purify water in the wilderness.

4. Different Methods of Fishing

(Image via)

When you’re a survival situation, food is important to keep your energy levels up – preferably a food source that has lots of protein. The following video, Survival Fishing | Tips & Techniques, shows you how you can fish in a true survival situation. This video is extremely informative — a must watch!

5. Learning to Identify Edible and Medicinal Plants

(Image via)

Sometimes, in a survival situation, food that contains protein is hard to find. Learning how to identify edible plants (some of which also provide medicinal properties as well) is a must. REMEMBER this important rule: Every edible plant has a look-alike, so please be absolutely certain that you are picking the right plant as your food source! I can’t stress that enough! Keeping a book on edible plants with photo identifications is a great addition to your survival gear. The following articles are very informative as well.

How to Press Flowers – Different Methods for Perfect Dried Petals Every Time

Home Projects Crafts How to Press Flowers – Different Methods for Perfect Dried Petals Every Time

Learn how to press flowers by hand with this simple diy tutorial. Here you’ll find how to press ordinary flowers with parchment paper. We’ve also included how to dry roses, and bonus tips & tricks to try the next time you’re pressing flowers.

How To Press Flowers

Have you ever had a bouquet of flowers and wanted it to last forever? Well, I have, so I made up my own way to dry flowers! There are many ways to dry flowers, leaves or plants but the most common one is to dry them up in a book. Yes, if you dry them up in a book, they will be flat, but there are many ways to use flat, dried flowers. I will include a few ideas on how to use flat, dried flowers, but feel free to make up your own!

How To Press Flowers – Different Methods For Perfect Petals Every Time

Flower Press Materials:

  • Flowers, leaves, or plants
  • Two sheets of paper
  • About 2 or 3 heavy books

Flower Press Procedure:

  1. Pick your flowers, leaves or plants that you want to dry. Remember that if you are picking your plants right out of the earth, make sure that you are not on someone’s property, picking their plants!
  2. Place two pieces of paper in the middle of the heavy book. Take your flowers and place them in the middle of the two pieces of paper. Make the flowers lie flat, so that when the book closes, the flowers won’t bend the way you don’t want them to.
  3. Close the book, place the other books on top, and push a bit on top of the books. Leave them in the book for a few days until they are delicate, crisp and dried.

After Pressing Flowers:

You Can Put Pressed Flowers In a Frame

If you want to place your dried plants in a picture frame, you will need:

  • Book dried flowers, leaves or plants
  • One blank piece of paper ( I like using white, but you can use other colors as well.)
  • Picture frame

First you glue the dried plants onto the piece of paper. Then you open up the picture frame and place the paper onto the glass. Remember to place the paper flower side down to the glass. Close the picture frame and hang it on a wall.

You Can Make a Card with Pressed Flowers

Pressed Flower Cards

If you want to make a birthday card with flowers, you will need:

  • piece of paper
  • Markers, any colors you want
  • Book dried flowers

First you fold the paper in half. Now you decorate the inside of the card, and write a message if you want. Decorate the front cover, but remember to leave a space for the flowers. Once you glue the flowers on to th front, you are done! Now you have flowers that will last you a lifetime! You can even start your very own collection, make cards for family and friends, or place in a picture frame to decorate your room!

How to Press a Rose (Dry a Rose):

How to Dry a Rose

image via

If you want to dry a rose, you will need:

  • One fresh rose
  • Scissors
  • Heavy books
  • Two pieces of paper

First, you will need to cut the stem. If you noticed, the rose’s stem is thicker then most flower stems. The stem will take longer to dry then the flower itself, because it’s thick and has lots of moisture in it. Take your scissors and cut the stem lengthwise, and snip off one part of the stem, once you are at the top of the stem. Now you only have half a stem. Like drying most flowers, put the rose in the middle of the two pieces of paper, and into the middle of one large book. Now, if you just close the book in the rose, you will not see the middle if the rose. So, now you will have to bend the rose so that you can see the middle, when it’s lying flat. Close the book, and add more books on top of the first book. Leave the rose in the books, until the rose is completely dried.

Here is a video on how to press flowers in a microwave!

TIPS For Pressing Flowers

  • For perfect pressing or drying, the humidity should be about 45 RH%
  • The flowers should be drying in a warm environment
  • If you want to make your flowers look nice when dried, place them in the book, when their still fresh
  • Don’t Press The Thick Plants – They are mostly water and just aren’t meant to be pressed
    • Cacti
    • Aloe
    • Echeveria
    • Yucca
    • Stapelia

5 All-Natural Weed Killers, Straight From Your Kitchen (No. 2 Will Kill ANYTHING)

5 All-Natural Weed Killers, Straight From Your Kitchen (No. 2 Will Kill ANYTHING) is republished from http://ift.tt/1Qfw8v0

Weeds — they creep up in your garden, sneak through the cracks in the sidewalk, and make it a point to grow everywhere that’s inconvenient to reach.

The easy-out, of course, is to reach for a bottle of store-bought herbicide. Readily available and modestly priced, it’s no wonder that many home gardeners choose it.

Unfortunately, many of these herbicides can be detrimental not only to weeds, but to humans as well. Studies suggest that the chemicals in these products can have a wide range of impacts. Some are relatively minor, such as the potential to cause skin irritations or allergic reactions, while others are more serious, such as nervous system problems and even cancer. In all cases, children and pets are especially vulnerable. Many of these products also have a long-term negative impact on the environment.

Seamazing: The Low-Cost Way To Re-mineralize Your Soil

Homemade weed killers offer the best possible alternative to manufactured herbicides. Inexpensive and made from common household materials, these natural weed killers can help keep unwanted plants at bay without unnecessary exposure to harmful chemicals.

Let’s look at several:

1. Boiling water

One of the simplest solution to weeds involves nothing more than water. To use this technique, boil water in a kettle, then, before it has a chance to cool, pour the water on the crown and roots of the offending plant. The hot temperature will scald virtually any plant it comes in contact with, generally dealing a mortal blow. Although plants with long taproots may require more than one treatment, this is an easy and completely natural way to combat pesky plants.

2. Salt

There’s a reason armies used to salt the fields of their enemies — salt has a powerful ability to render soil barren. Because it affects the ability of roots to take up water from the soil, salt effectively dries out existing plants and makes it difficult for new ones to take hold. While not an ideal solution for gardens and lawns since it can cause permanent damage to the soil, salt can be useful for treating pathways, sidewalks and other areas that are meant to be plant-free. For easy application, dissolve one part salt in eight parts water and apply to the desired locations.

3. Vinegar and lemon juice

Plants are picky when it comes to soil pH, and lowering the pH immediately around a weed will almost always cause it to wither. For this reason, it’s not unusual to find acidic ingredients in many commercial herbicides. Before resorting to an unknown chemical concoction, though, it’s worth trying a version made from common pantry items.

Vinegar and lemon juice both contain strong acids and can be combined for a pH-targeting weed treatment. Simply combine four ounces of lemon juice with one quart of vinegar and apply directly on the offending plants. This solution will kill most plants, but without causing residual damage to the surrounding soil.

4. Pickle juice

Finish off a jar of pickles recently? Don’t throw away the bottle without putting the leftover liquid to good use first! Pickle brine is full of vinegar and salt, making it a natural combination of these two weed-tackling substances. Apply directly to problem plants and pat yourself on the back for finding such a creative way to handle uninvited garden guests.

5. Soap

One of the most popular homemade herbicides involves combining two of the treatments mentioned above (vinegar and salt) with a third household product — dish soap. While not necessarily damaging to weeds in and of itself, soap contains surfactants which help the other ingredients “stick” to the plant, enhancing the weed-killing properties of the solution. To create this triple-whammy weed control, combine one gallon of vinegar (to lower the pH) with one cup of salt (to dry out the roots) and one tablespoon of dish soap (to help it adhere to the plants).

Controlling weeds doesn’t necessarily need to involve harsh chemicals and impossible-to-pronounce ingredients. Take advantage of these homemade alternatives to safely keep unwanted plants in check.
