Being frugal is a good thing, but it’s possible to be frugal to a fault. Yes, it’s great to save money, but when you only buy cheap products, you’re going to end up dealing with broken products. Then you’ll be going back to the store to replace what broke and will end up spending more money than if you’d just bought a premium product in the first place.

As PreparedMind101 explains in this video, there are certain products where you should make sure to purchase something of high quality. This is especially true of survival gear. Here’s his list of three emergency items you shouldn’t skimp.

1. Primary Knife – As he says, “the knife is the oldest and most useful tool in human history.” In a survival scenario, you’re going to use it a lot and for many different things. A cheap, flimsy knife is going to cause a lot of problems.

2. Backpacks and Bags – Whatever type of bag you put your survival kit in, make sure it’s a high-quality bag. You don’t want to end up with a bag that’s uncomfortable or tears easily. You can’t carry all of your survival gear without a good bag.

3. Multitool – As he explains, your multitool is going to be one of “your biggest problem-solving items.” As with the knife, there are so many things you will use it for that you can’t afford to have one that could break on you.
