One of the problems with being a decorative homesteader is that I like to decorate my yard with many trees, fences, and ornamental pieces. The bad side? I also enjoy having beautiful birds fluttering in and out of my homestead and with the mass amount of squirrels I seem to always be hosting, they always get to the bird food first.
So what should we do? Help prevent squirrels and larger unwanted birds from reaching the bird seed with a squirrel proof bird feeder. Read on!

Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders | Be A Better Host To Your Beautiful Visitors
Squirrels are known to be good at stealing food that’s been put out for the birds. While squirrels are a step up from rodents and pests, it can still be highly frustrating to watch as they eat the bird food you lovingly placed in your feeders for the colorful birds to enjoy.
These cute but ravenous little monsters scare off the birds, devour all the seeds, and can even chomp bird feeders to bits. But fear not! A squirrel proof bird feeder is the answer! Keep squirrels away from feeders with these 7 ideas and designs of squirrel proof bird feeders to help you decide which you like best.
1. Squirrel-Free Electronic Bird Feeder
This bird feeder has a built-in, battery-operated charger that gives static correction to squirrels when they make contact. It is important to know that the small charge only startles squirrels and does not hurt them. We want them to leave our bird feeders alone – but we also don’t want to hurt the squirrels! Birds are safe from getting shocked as they cannot make a contact with only two legs.
2. Flexi-Perch Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder
These Flexi-Perches, combined with PVC pipe of the right length and width, make an inexpensive, easy-to-build, and effective squirrel-proof bird feeder. The PVC pipe is slick and without texture for the squirrels to cling to. The flexibility of the perches makes the weight of a squirrel too much for the perch to stay horizontal, forcing the squirrel to slide off. This is possibly the most inexpensive squirrel proof bird feeder on the list.
3. Metal Squirrel Baffle Black
Another way to prevent squirrels from taking all your bird seed is a baffle. Baffles are usually in the shape of a cone or dome that fit two places. They can either go underneath the feeder on a pole so squirrels are unable to climb up, or they can be placed above the feeder so squirrels can’t climb down the pole. If you have a yard with many trees that have potential low hanging branches, both the top and the bottom of your feeder may need to be protected.
4. Cage Bird Feeder
A cage bird feeder will attract both clinging and perching birds. The mesh used for this bird cage must be the proper size in order to allow the birds you want in the feeder to come and go as they please. It is ideal for preventing squirrels or large nuisance birds from swiping your bird seed.
5. Roller Feeder
While this contraption is one that may be for the more creative homesteader, it works wonderfully well when getting rid of squirrels. These feeders sway from side to side when a squirrel climbs or jumps on the feeder housing. Their weight and distribution will not allow the bird feeder to remain steady. Squirrels either roll off or are befuddled before they can steal any seed with this roller feeder.
6. Collapsible Perch Feeders
This squirrel-proof feeder has collapsible perches that can only hold the weight of a small bird. If ever a critter gets the idea to try and climb up on the small perch, it simply bends and drops the animal. This design is simple and effective. As shown above, it also has the look of a traditional feeder.
7. Yankee Flipper
This Yankee Flipper is a motor driven, battery powered, weight activated squirrel-proof bird feeder. The feeder begins spinning once a squirrel hops on to the perch, taking the squirrel for a whirl before it loses its grip and is thrown gently from the perch. Again, we don’t want to hurt our friendly squirrels! This is not designed to swing them off violently, just to gently toss them off so they don’t sneak away with your bird food.
Hopefully this list will help you to make an educated choice when choosing which squirrel proof bird feeders you will purchase (or make!) this weekend. While all of these options will work, be sure to choose the feeder that is best suited to your needs and style preferences. Enjoy the beautiful birds that will now have the opportunity to make your home their home!
