If you’ve ever bought a piece of survival gear such as a weather radio, an emergency whistle, or a magnesium fire starter, you may have noticed a long piece of cord attached to it. Maybe your tactical watch has a twisted rope for its strap, or maybe your rain jacket has a stretched cord incorporated into the design.
If so, it’s probably paracord–short for parachute cord–and it’s one of the most versatile tools you can have in a survival scenario.
This unassuming accessory can do a lot more than just tie things together. It is strong enough to do heavy-duty tasks like pulling people from a lake to safety or lifting heavy objects up the side of a cliff. And it’s flexible enough to use as a survival tool. It can even act as a thread if you want to repair a ripped pair of pants or need a line for fishing.
