Politically correct absurdity? The British supermarket Waitrose is purging what it considers to be racist Easter candy from its shelves. (Image Credit: Waitrose)

A British supermarket is apologizing for selling racist Easter Candy. To elaborate, Waitrose is removing white, milk chocolate and dark chocolate ducklings from its shelves.

In fact, the ducklings with the names Fluffy, Crispy, and Ugly, reportedly offends a few customers, Metro UK claims. In detail, they make Fluffy of white chocolate, Crispy of milk chocolate, and Ugly of dark chocolate.

To clarify, some Waitrose customers believe calling the dark chocolate duckling ugly is racist. To elaborate, the thinking is labeling dark Ugly promotes bigotry against non-white people.

Even Easter Chocolate Is Now Racist

Waitrose is pulling the ducklings from its stores after critical tweets. Moreover, the supermarket chain is apologizing for selling racist chocolate.

For instance, one customer allegedly tweets, “Ugly is the dark one on the right this is not right. I agree, doesn’t look good at all.” In response, White is relabeling the three ducklings.

However, Fluffy, Crispy, and Ugly are reportedly back on Waitrose’s shelves, Metro UK reveals. To elaborate, the ducklings are in new packaging that does not contain the offensive wording.

Why Are Chocolate Ducklings Racist?

Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Ugly Duckling is reportedly the inspiration for the trio of chocolate birds.

Oddly enough, in the story, other ducks mock a brown duckling as ugly. However, the ugly duckling grows up to be a beautiful white swan.

Predictably, some customers accuse Waitrose of excess political correctness for repackaging the ducklings, Metro UK claims. However, the Waitrose management is standing by its decision to remove the offensive chocolates from its shelves.

‘We are very sorry for any upset caused by the name of this product, it was absolutely not our intention to cause any offence,” a Waitrose spokesman tells Metro UK.

Political Correctness And Racism In The Supermarket

Waitrose is a minor player in the British grocery business with a 5% market share, Statista estimates. However, it is easy to see why Waitrose is eager to apologize.

Notably, traditional UK supermarkets like Waitrose and industry leader Tesco are losing market share to the German discounters Aldi and Lidl. In fact, Aldi now has an 8% share of the British supermarket business and Lidl a 5.6% share.

On the other hand, Tesco is still Great Britain’s largest grocer with a 27.4% market share. However, in the United Kingdom, even supermarket managers are afraid of controversies about racism. Hence, managers are likely to remove more racist candy from British supermarket shelves in the future.
