Rhode Island is known for being America’s smallest state, but don’t let the size fool you. Great things often come in small packages.

Over 60% of Rhode Island’s landmass is made up of woodlands, which along with the gorgeous seashore make this state a gem for campers. If you live on the East Coast and are looking for somewhere to go this summer, give a Rhode Island camping trip a try.

Here are our favorite places to camp in Rhode Island.

1. Fishermens Memorial State Park – Narragansett

Fishermen’s State Park and Campground offers campers a ‘seaside village’ atmosphere where visitors will find neatly trimmed grass, tree lined paths, and activities for the whole family. Whether you are looking for a place to pitch a tent and enjoy a camp fire, or park your RV and play some basketball or tennis, Fishermen’s can accommodate you. One of Fishermen’s most attractive features is its close proximity to popular State Beach areas like Scarborough, Roger Wheeler, and Salty Brine. 3. Pulaski Park – Chepachet

Located within the 4000 acre George Washington Management Area, the 100 acre Pulaski Memorial Recreation Area is a “day use” facility offering users a multitude of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. From the first class trout fishing in the spring, to enjoying a picnic, a short hike, or a cool swim in the 13 acre Peck Pond in the summer, to cross-country skiing on the 10 miles of groomed trails into the adjacent George Washington Management area in the winter, Pulaski provides year round enjoyment for all ages. 4. Burlingame State Park – Charlestown

The entrance to Burlingame State Park picnic area and the Kimball Sanctuary is Prosser Trail, an exit off US Route 1 in Charlestown, RI. This very popular state recreation area offers 50 fireplaces, toilets, drinking water, a swimming beach and a nearby DEM boat launch for boating and fishing. The campground is 3,100 acres of rocky woodland that surrounds Watchaug Pond in Charlestown. Learn more.

7. Melville Ponds Campground – Portsmouth

Melville Ponds Campground is located on Aquidneck Island in Newport County, in the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. We are 5 miles from historical Newport, RI and the ocean beaches. We offer spacious campsites for RV’s and tents. Learn more.

8. Echo Lake Campground – Pascoag

A family- owned and operated business since 1952, Echo Lake Campground is in rural northwestern Rhode Island. The campground is situated on the westerly shore of the lake, with an elevation of 700 feet above sea level. The campground includes 230 wooded acres with many streams and winding trails that offer nature lovers unlimited hiking pleasure. We have 3,000 feet of lake front with crystal clear water for swimming, water skiing, boating, fishing, sailing and canoeing. Learn more.

Located within the 4000 acre George Washington Management Area, and on the shores of Bowdish Reservoir, the 100 acre George Washington Memorial Camping Area is an overnight, primitive camping facility offering a multitude of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Learn more.

10. Charlestown Breachway – Charlestown

Located on the east side of “the Breachway” is a camping area for self contained RV’s, a state beach, some of the best salt water fishing in South County and a panoramic view of Block Island Sound. The Charlestown Breachway does not have accomodations for canvas camping. All units must be self contained: Unit must have permanent holding tanks for potable water, grey water and black water. Bathroom equipment must be permanently fixed to the unit. This location also has boat launch with limited parking. Learn more.
