I used to get headaches simply inhaling chemical fumes while passing through the cleaning product aisle of the store. I began to use less toxic products from the health food store. However, they seem to cost an arm and a leg. Then it hit me to start doing homemade cleaning products, and the surprising result is that I clean the house more often. Making nontoxic laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid not only saves me money, it helps our environment. It is pretty surprising to watch just how great these cleansers work. My homemade detergent gets my clothes softer than any other commercial detergent out there. My homemade dishwashing soap can even do a better job cleaning greasy dishes, and it’s gentler on my hands. You have the choice to add whatever fragrances you like for your homemade cleaners by simply changing the essential oils you use. Homemade cleaning products are guilt free and “green”, so you never have to worry about the Earth.

Before you get ahead of yourself and begin making the cleaners, start collecting an array of containers. You can easily purchase spray bottles in stores, but it is simpler and cheaper to keep your old laundry detergent containers, they work the best anyhow. I stock and reuse most of my containers for other uses too. An inexpensive plastic funnel will help you pour your solutions inside containers. Some of your are already aware that ketchup cleans copper cookware (leave on a thin film for about 20 minutes). You may also know that half vinegar, half distilled water solution is excelling to shine your windows. If you sprinkle a bit of baking soda on your carpets and vacuum it, they make a safe and easy deodorizer. Lemon juice can vanish stains from porcelain material. You could alternatively make furniture polish using one part lemon juice with two parts olive oil.

This simple detergent is gentle on the Earth, and your water septic system will leave your clothes smelling incredible and soft to the touch. Even the cost is just a tenth of the price you would normally buy detergent for in stores. Even for those who have hard water, this works well. You could also use it straight to pre soak stubborn spots in clothing and use it in the carpet for stain removal. Just make sure you soak up the liquid with paper towels or cloth once you clean the carpet stains. If you currently use commercial detergent, when you first switch to a homemade detergent you may notice that it leaves residue on your clothes. You can still fix this by adding a cup of white vinegar with the detergent when it’s in the washing machine.

1∕3 to 1⁄2 cup liquid Lavender Castile
soap
1⁄2 cup washing soda (Arm & Hammer Washing Soda is nice)
1⁄2 cup borax (Such as Mule Team Borax)

Mix all ingredients in a 2gallon bucket then add hot water to fill the bucket and stir it well. The concoction will be thinner than commercial laundry detergent. You should shake up the mixture before you use it since it has a tendency to separate. An average load could take t 1⁄4 to 1∕3 cup.

Note: You can use grated Castile or vegetable oil soap rather than liquid Castile if you wish. It needs to finely grated. Otherwise, it could leave clumps in your laundry. This type of detergent is best when you use it with hot water.

This cleaner is a terrific solution for kitchen counters. Alternatively, you can use cedarwood essential oil to clean the wood surfaces in my house.

Ingredients:

One tsp. washing soda
One tsp. liquid peppermint castile soap
Two cups of hot water
Two Tbsp. White vinegar
Ten drops of peppermint essential oil

Combine all ingredients and mix them while ensuring to mix it the washing soda (it can clump and clog the sprayer) and fill the spray bottle

Note: If you have granite counter tops, do not add vinegar in your recipe.

This dish liquid is thinner compared to regular dish liquid and doesn’t be surprised when it does not make suds. Even without it, it does a better job on greasy dishes and stains on mugs. Not only does the lavender essential oil smell good, it is an antibacterial. Ingredients:

Three Tbsp. Liquid Lavender Castile Soap
Two cups warm water
Two tsp. Vegetable glycerin
Two Tbsp. White vinegar
Ten drops lavender essential oil

Mix the ingredients in a jar, cover, and shake it well to blend. You can use about 1 Tbsp for dishwashing purposes.

Use this simple powder to clean your bathtub, toilets, and sinks. You can make this into scouring paste by adding water to thicken it. Remember that you can’t save the leftovers, so just make as much as you’ll be needing that day. I like putting peppermint leaves from my garden for more of a scent.

Ingredients:

One cup baking soda
Five drops of peppermint essential oil
1⁄4 cup of dried peppermint leaves (optional)

With a fork, mix your essential oil with the baking powder. Then sprinkle onto surfaces and scrub with a wet sponge. Use it in toilets, sprinkle in the toilet then pour about 1⁄2 cup white vinegar on the surface then scrub it with a toilet brush. For tougher toilet stains, sprinkle plain borax in the toilet for around 10 minutes before adding the scouring powder.
