Want to know how to build a cheap shed? If you’re on a budget but still want to make a shed, then this shed plan will help you out.

How to Build a Cheap Shed

I have to say a shed is an important part of any farm. I can’t imagine ours without one. So when our old one started to show signs of deterioration, instead of repairing, I thought ‘why not build a new one?’ And that’s how it started. If you’re also planning on building a shed on a budget, then this shed project is for you. Try your homesteading skills and build your own cheap shed!

Before you build a shed here are some pointers you have to keep in mind:

1. Determine your needs.

2. Check if you need to ask for a permit.

3. Look what shed is available in store.

4. Create a plan which will benefit you in the future

5. Plan ahead.

6. Plan what shed you want.

7. Determine what type of shed you will build (wood or metal).

Here is what you need:

• Hammer
• Clamps
• Air compressor
• Air hose
• Nail gun
• Drill
• Tape measure
• Circular saw
• Caulk gun
• Chalk line
• Level
• Drill bit set
• Hearing protection
• Jigsaw
• Stepladder
• Pocket hole jig
• Router
• Sawhorses
• Speed square
• Tin snips

Step 1. Foundation

Make sure to check that the foundation is square. For a more detailed explanation, check out this video tutorial.

Step 2. Floor Frame

Grab your boards and start measuring. Once you’re done, you can now cut the pieces and start building your floor frame. Check it out here.

Step 3. Flooring

Now that you’ve completed the floor frame, time to install your floor sheeting. Be sure that it’s the right fit before you cut, glue and nail your sheet. Get all the steps here.

Step 4. Building the Roof Rafters

Be sure that you have all the angles of your roof rafters properly. You wouldn’t want them to end up uneven. Watch everything you need here.

Step 5. Wall Framing

Set your roof rafters aside and start working on your wall frame next. See how here.

Step 6. Install the Siding

Once you have the wall frame up, it’s now time to cover it up with the siding of your choice. Check out how to properly do it here.

Step 7. Roof Framing and sheet application

After you have all the sidings attached, next up is roofing your shed. Remember the roof rafters you build before, you’ll be installing that along with the roof sheet. See how to do it here.

Step 8. Attach the Shed Trim

Can you see it’s starting to look like a shed now? Don’t forget to install the trims. Get the steps here.

Step 9. Install the Asphalt Shingles

Before attaching the asphalt shingles, it is recommended that you check the instructions from the manufacturer. We wouldn’t want anything going to waste due to wrong installation, do we? For the most common way to install it, you can also refer to this video tutorial.

Step 10. Door building

You’re almost done! Now that you have the roof and the walls up, next thing you have to worry about is the door. See how you can build one here.

Step 11. Paint the shed

Congratulations! Your cheap shed is now built. You do have the option to leave it as is, but I’m sure you don’t want an eyesore. So let’s start painting. Before you do though, here are some reminders:

• Make sure to clean the surface,use a caulk to help make a fine surface.
• Prime the trim and wall before painting the desired paint.
• And don’t forget to follow these steps.
