So you saw a roach. It’s not an ideal situation, but it happens. First of all, don’t panic. You do have options to get rid of roaches and keep them gone. While the most obvious option is to hire an exterminator, that’s not always a feasible option. Getting rid of roaches permanently requires both immediate action and long‐term maintenance. If you want to evict these pests for good, you’re going to have to stay on top of it. Here are some tips on eliminating roaches from your home.

1. Cut Off Their Water Supply

According to the National Pest Management Association, roaches can survive without food for a month, but they will die in a week without water. With that in mind, your first priority should be to eliminate any sources of leaking water. Check the pressure relief valve on your hot water tank, remove the top off of your toilet and listen for a hissing sound, check your meter line, and examine your shower, faucets, hoses, taps, and any potential sources of water. Repair the leaks yourself or hire a professional.

2. Clean the House

A dirty household is a haven for cockroaches. Start by cleaning every inch of your kitchen, focusing especially on getting rid of grease. Make sure there is no food crumbs or spills left, and make it a point to clean up after every meal. Store your food in airtight containers so that roaches aren’t attracted. Even though they can survive for a month without food, no sensible roach would turn down a free meal. According to Fox News Magazine, roaches hate cucumbers, so leaving a few peels around may help to drive them away.

3. Poison the Roaches with Gel Bait

Go to the store and purchase some gel bait for roaches. If you know where the nest is located, place the bait as close to it as possible. If you don’t know where the nest is located, place the bait in places where the roaches are likely to encounter it, such as on kitchen countertops, under the sink, in the corners, and along baseboards. The roaches will take the bait, bring it back to the nest, and eventually all of the roaches will perish from the tainted food supply. This process can take several weeks. Make sure you keep the bait away from pets and children during this time.

4. Maintain Your Household

One cleanup isn’t going to do the job. You’re going to need to be vigilant. Seal any cracks around the house, and try to keep excessive debris away from the perimeter of your home. Roaches thrive in cluttered areas. If you still haven’t seen results after thoroughly cleaning and maintaining the home and using gel bait, you may want to look into other options such as insecticide sprays, liquid pesticides, or even professional grade pesticides. Store‐bought or homemade traps can also be an effective option.

5. Hire a Professional

If you’re struggling to get your roach problem under control, it may be in your best interested to hire a professional. If you’re more of a DIYer, you could always purchase a sprayer and attempt to exterminate the pests yourself. Companies like Qspray sell sprayers that can be used at home, but make sure that you carefully follow the guidelines for use. When in doubt, go with a professional. Spraying in an enclosed area can be dangerous if you’re not well‐ versed in the required procedures.
