Declassified U.S. Defense Department videos provide evidence that UFOs exist but the Pentagon is refusing to investigate them, a former Assistant Secretary of Defense alleged.

“The videos: along with observations by pilots and radar operators, appear to provide evidence of the existence of aircraft far superior to anything possessed by the United States or its allies,” Christopher K. Mellon wrote in a Washington Post op-ed. Mellon served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence for Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Defense Department officials confirmed that there have been more than a dozen encounters between U.S. military planes and unidentified aircraft along the East Coast since 2015, Mellon noted. He thinks recent UFO incidents that were widely covered by the media indicate a potential threat to national security.

In one story Mellon pointed to Air Force F-15s chased an unidentified aircraft that was traveling over Oregon at high speeds on October 25, Fox News reported. The object moved at speeds so fast the fighter jets were unable to catch it.

A video showing an encounter between Navy aircraft and a UFO off the East Coast in 2015 was only declassified after a Freedom of information Act request by the Stars Academy of Arts and Sciences. Mellon serves an advisor to that organization.

Are UFOs from Russia?

“Is it possible that America has been technologically leap-frogged by Russia or China,” Mellon wrote? “Perhaps Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent chest-thumping claims about propulsion breakthroughs are not pure braggadocio.”

“Unfortunately, we have no idea, because we aren’t even seeking answers,” Mellon charged.

The Pentagon has no effort to research unidentified flying objects, and makes no efforts to investigate UFO reports, Mellon alleged. The Defense Department claimed it stopped funding a program to investigate UFOs in 2012, The New York Times reported.

“I know from numerous discussions with Pentagon officials over the past two years that military departments and agencies treat such incidents as isolated events rather than as part of a pattern requiring serious attention and investigation,” Mellon wrote. Military officers and intelligence officials are afraid of being mocked as the “alien guy,” so they refuse to talk about UFOs.

Are UFOs a Threat to National Security?

“I know they continue to occur,” Mellon wrote of UFO reports, “because we are being approached by military personnel who are concerned about national security and frustrated by how the Defense Department is handling such reports.”

Mellon, a former chief of staff to the U.S. Senate Intelligence committee believes UFOs might be a threat to national security. He believes US airspace is being violated and nothing is being done about it.

“It is time to set aside taboos regarding “UFOs” and instead listen to our pilots and radar operators,” Mellon concluded.
