Here’s How EMP Weapons Threaten Our Very Survival

Here’s How EMP Weapons Threaten Our Very Survival was first seen on http://totalsurvival.net

Super-EMP weapons could theoretically cause massive firestorms, chemical plant explosions, and toxic clouds that can kill thousands.

Recent investigations by the federal government are now concluding that EMP weapons threaten our very survival even though many of us do not even realize it. In fact, America’s enemies could deploy EMP weapons capable of destroying all U.S. infrastructure.

To explain, electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons generate blasts of energy that fry electronics, communications, wiring, and the power grid. Notably, Congress has been studying the EMP weapons threat since 2000, Clearance Jobs reports.

Additionally, EMP weapons so worry President Donald Trump that he issued an Executive Order on Coordinating National Resilience to Electromagnetic Pulses, Forbes reports. To explain, Trump wants to know what the risks from EMP weapons are. Thus, the federal government does not know the extent of the EMP danger.

However, Forbes contributor Ariel Cohen writes, “preliminary studies indicate that a catastrophic EMP event could cripple the U.S. economy and its military.” Specifically, Cohen thinks EMP weapons could “could cause cascading failures across the entire country.”

China’s Super-EMP Weapons Could Devastate America

Moreover, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is deploying a nuclear warhead that can “devastate America with its enhanced electromagnetic pulse (EMP),” The Epoch Times claims.

In fact, the Chinese warhead could be so powerful that one missile could disable most of America’s infrastructure. Importantly, analysts make these claims in a Department of Defense threat assessment, The Epoch Times asserts.

Plus a PLA document states the “United States is more vulnerable to attacks [from EMP] than any other country in the world,” The Epoch Times reports. Consequently, The Epoch Times alleges the People’s Republic of China is developing “Super-EMP weapons.”

It is easy to see why the PLA is researching EMP weaponry. Theoretically, an EMP attack could knock out America’s nuclear deterrent. However, I can’t imagine Chinese weapons destroying all the US Navy’s ballistic weapons submarines. In fact, an Ohio class submarine carries 14 Trident II D5 missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads anywhere on Earth.

Iran And North Korea Developing Super-EMP Weapons

Iran, North Korea, and Russia are also developing Super-EMP weapons capable of crippling the United States.

So, all three potential enemies are capable of “blackout warfare,” The Epoch Times speculates. In fact, an enemy could blackout everything between New York and San Francisco by exploding one Super-EMP bomb 19 miles above the Earth’s surface.

The damage a super-EMP could theoretically cause includes massive firestorms, chemical plant explosions, and toxic clouds that can kill thousands, The Epoch Times reveals. Moreover, The Epoch Times claims a Super-EMP weapon could cause nuclear reactors to overheat and explode.

Is America At War With Iran?

Oddly, America could be at war with a country that might possess Super-EMP weapons: Iran.

To explain, the former Marine Corps intelligence officer Scott Ritter writes “America Just Declared War on Iran,” in The American Conservative. To clarify, Ritter believes the Trump Administration’s designation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization is an act of war.

In detail, the IRGC is a paramilitary force the Iranian government uses to wage war in places like Iraq. Specifically, Ritter thinks designating the IRGC, an Iranian government agency, as terrorists will provoke Iranian retaliation.

In retaliation, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is recommending that Iran’s Supreme National Security Council designate the U.S. Central Command a terrorist group. To elaborate, the Central Command oversees American military operations in the Middle East.

Consequently, Ritter writes; “It is no longer a question of if Americans will die in a conflict with Iran, but when.” In particular, Ritter thinks the IGRC will attack US military forces.

EMP Weapons Threaten Everybody

In the final analysis, EMP weapons are a threat to every American. Therefore, every American household and business needs to prepare for an EMP assault.

You can prepare now for a Super-EMP attack by stockpiling food and other supplies. Even more importantly, you should install a backup power system in your home or business. Given recent events, it could only be a matter of time before America suffers an EMP attack.

How to Deal With Stray Dogs

The following post How to Deal With Stray Dogs is available on http://totalsurvival.net/

My friend Damian over at reThinksurvival recently posted this article that he found about dog attacks. Like him, this was something that I hadn't considered until last month, when my brother was nearly torn to shreds by two very large pit bulls…

Read on to see the article that Damian sent me:

Like the article’s title says, this isn’t something I’ve considered… at all! And, yet, this could become a real issue as wild packs of dogs could become a very significant problem in many urban areas:

As discussed in Feral Dog Packs: A Rising Epidemic for this Nation, wild dog packs are not only an issue in post-disaster situations, they are already a large concern in urban areas. No doubt many of you have read the news headlines of packs of wild, abandoned dogs rummaging all over Detroit.

Sadly these abandoned animals will only continue to roam the streets of Detroit and continue to wreck havoc. Due to the city’s financial woes, the city’s animal control department’s budget has also been cut, leaving the city no choice but to allow the animals to roam. The Humane Society of the United States director visited Detroit recently, saying

“It was almost post-apocalyptic, where there are no businesses, nothing except people in houses and dogs running around. The suffering of animals goes hand in hand with the suffering of people.”

**It's not just detroit that is dealing with stray dogs… Check out this video I found that details a pretty amazing story of how packs of feral dogs in Moscow are learning how to be better beggars, and even how to ride Moscow's complex subway system.

**Skip to about the 50 second mark to start the story and avoid the introductions**

The real problem here isn't just the increasing number of dogs in cities… there is a major dark side to the recent population explosion of feral dogs… One that I know all to well:**

Medical Issues Arise From Dog Bites

The Washington Times reports, “Stray dogs are literally terrorizing the city as the ratio of humans to animals continues to balance out.” To make matters worse, dog bites have increased as well. Last year, there were 903 dog bites in Detroit. This canine aggressiveness has forced some U.S. mail deliveries to halt in certain neighborhoods. One Detroit resident was scalped by two stray dogs who attacked her on her porch.

Outbreaks of rabies is a major concern for city’s that have a large population of unvaccinated street dogs as they are one the most common carriers of the painful and often fatal disease. That said, rabies isn’t the only medical issue to be concerned with:

  • Parvovirus should be suspected if bitten by an unknown animal.
  • Bacterial infections of soft tissues or bone (osteomyelitis) which can become life threatening if untreated.
  • Capnocytophaga canimorsus transmission (a gram-negative bacterium) can cause overwhelming sepsis in asplenic patients, the elderly, and the immunocompromised. Empriric treatment for this bacteria following a dog bite, consisting of a third-generation cephalosporins early in the infection, should be instituted in these patient populations, or following deep bites or dog bites to the hand.

Treating a Dog Bite

If the skin is not disturbed, or if there is a minimal abrasion present, it may be reasonable to watch for signs of infection (pain, redness, warmth, swelling, and drainage of pus or fluid) before seeking medical care.

Medical care should be accessed if the dog bite disrupts the skin causing a puncture, laceration, or tear. As well, if there is pain at or near the injury site, underlying structures may have been damaged and medical care may be needed.

Essentials of dog bite treatment are: inspection, debridement, irrigation, and closure.

  1. Carefully inspect bite wounds to identify depth of injury and devitalized tissue. Obtaining an adequate inspection of a bite wound without it first being anesthetized is nearly impossible. Care should be taken to visualize the bottom of the wound and, if applicable, to examine the wound through a range of motion.
  2. Debridement is an effective means of preventing infection. Removing devitalized tissue, particulate matter, and clots prevents these from becoming a source of infection, much like any foreign body. Clean surgical wound edges result in smaller scars and promote faster healing.
  3. Irrigation is another important means of infection prevention. A 19-gauge blunt needle and a 35-mL syringe provide adequate pressure (7 psi) and volume to clean most bite wounds. In general, 100-200 mL of irrigation solution per inch of wound is required. Heavily contaminated bite wounds require more irrigation. Isotonic sodium chloride solution is a safe, available, effective, and inexpensive irrigating solution. Few of the numerous other solutions and mixtures of saline and antibiotics have any advantages over saline. If a shield-like device is used, take care to prevent the irrigating solution from returning to the wound, which decreases the effectiveness of the irrigation.
  4. Primary closure may be considered in limited bite wounds that can be cleansed effectively (this excludes puncture wounds, i.e., cat bites). Other wounds are best treated by delayed primary closure. Facial wounds, because of the excellent blood supply, are at low risk for infection, even if closed primarily, but the risk of superinfection must be discussed with the patient prior to closure. Bite wounds to the hands and lower extremities, with a delay in presentation, or in immunocompromised hosts, generally should be left open.
  5. If a bite wound involves the hand, consider immobilizing in a bulky dressing or splint to limit use and promote elevation.

(Source)

If seen at a medical facility, professionals will suggest administering a tetanus booster, may initiate anti-rabies treatment and a round of antibiotics as a preventative for bites from animals with unknown vaccination records. Other animals that may carry the rabies virus are cats, foxes, bats, raccoons, or skunks in the Americas.

After the wound has been treated, regularly inspect it and if fever, sepsis, spreading cellulitis, severe edema, crush injury, or loss of function is present, seek medical assistance.

The threat of feral dog packs do exist and will only increase from the poor economic downturn we are experiencing. Prepare accordingly for this issue and understand the mannerisms of a feral dog, attack behavior and feeding habits.

The information above is extremely important to know, but even that may not be enough…

My brother was attacked over a month ago and he has still been in and out of the ER nearly every day from the infections that the bite caused… He has not been able to work and barely been able to move.

This vicious attack was from two so called “house pets” imagine what an entire pack of these animals could do…

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against pit bulls, they are not bad dogs..

It's just the people that raise them to do bad things.

Google Spies On Gamers With “Stadia”, Its New Streaming Service

Google Spies On Gamers With “Stadia”, Its New Streaming Service Find more on: http://totalsurvival.net

Google spies on gamers and it could eventually sell the data that it collects to advertisers or gaming companies.

Google spies on gamers with its new Stadia gaming platform. In fact, Alphabet (the company that owns Google) uses Stadia as a surveillance tool.

For instance, Alphabet can learn what games you play, how long you play, and what game system you use through Stadia, Eric Ravenscraft writes at One Zero. Moreover, Ravenscraft believes Stadia will give Google “a surprisingly intimate picture of who you are.”

“Google’s going to have players’ data across age, across region, across gender, across genre,” Rachel Kowert predicts. In addition, Kowert thinks Alphabet could monitor players’ social interactions through Stadia as well. Notably, Kowert is the research director at Take This, a group that studies gamers’ mental health.

In essence, Google could learn who you are playing with or what other gamers you chat with. Google could also monitor your payments to see what games you will pay for.

Google Spies On Gamers And Monitors Their Behavior

Additionally, Alphabet’s algorithms and artificial intelligence can learn a lot about your behavior if you play on Stadia.

“A good psychologist should be able to watch how most of us game and understand a whole lot about us,” Jon Festinger says of the data which Stadia collects. Festinger is a professor at the Centre for Digital Media.

For example, Festinger thinks Google could learn “Are you timid? Are you bold? Do you take risks? What kind of risks do you take? What do you see and not see? Where are your blind spots?” from Stadia.

Alphabet already knows your political leanings and interests, Festinger claims. To elaborate, Alphabet learns your interests and beliefs from your search history. Consequently, Alphabet could learn more about your politics or religious beliefs from Stadia gaming.

Alphabet Is Behind Pokemon Go

Alphabet could conceivably design new games with the data that Stadia collects. In fact, they built Pokemon Go with data gathered by Niantic, a Google startup.

Niantic themselves created a game called Ingress to gather the data used in Pokemon Go, Ravenscraft states. Remarkably, Pokemon Go is the most successful mobile game of all time.

Alphabet could eventually sell the data that Stadia collects to advertisers or gaming companies. Specifically, Google states Stadia’s purpose is to “push the envelope of game development.”

Who Is Google Sharing Your Data With?

Notably, Alphabet’s official privacy policy allows Google to combine data you share with one service and share it with others, Ravenscroft notes.

So, Alphabet could combine data about your Gmail, Google Docs, Google Assistants, Google Lens, Google Store, or YouTube use in tandem with Stadia and then sell it. Stadia as a gaming platform currently operates on a wide variety of devices including smartphones, tablets, consoles, and computers.

In addition, you can play Stadia games through YouTube and other media that Alphabet owns. From this, we can see that Alphabet designed Stadia to help its many platforms make more money.

How Alphabet Makes Money From Your Data

Ultimately, Alphabet wants a piece of the lucrative multi-player game business.

The biggest multi-player game, Fortnite, could have generated $3 billion in revenue from 250 million players, Market Mad House claims. For this reason, one of Alphabet’s goals is to create more games as popular as Fortnite or Pokemon Go.

Tellingly, Chinese social media giant Tencent Holdings owns 40% of Fortnite’s creator Epic Games. Furthermore, some gamers accuse Epic Games of spying on Fortnite players and mining their data. Data mining involves collecting information with the intention of selling it.

Alphabet could sell advertising in games as well. In particular, Alphabet made $32.635 billion from advertising in the last three months of 2018. Most of that money comes from ads they place in the Google search engine.

All in all, Alphabet could sell advertising in your kids’ games soon. They could eventually sell data about your kids’ behavior to game developers, toy companies, and candy makers.

How Google Conducts Research On You

Everybody should be leery of Google products like Stadia because Alphabet is a research company, Ravenscraft warns. Alphabet’s business model is to gather data, examine it, and look for ways to make a financial profit from that data.

Similarly, Google is studying gamers’ behavior in order to make money from them. Because of this, it is probably not a good idea to let your kids play Stadia games. If they do, Google may end up using your children as guinea pigs for its next experiment.

All About Archery and Its Survival Essence

—This post is courtesy of PreppersWill.com and shared with permission—

Survival Archery 101

The invention of gunpowder changed the battlefield forever and a man was able to improve his ways of waging war and killing food. Long before gunpowder was invented, a sharp stick propelled down range was the top of ballistic technology.

For thousands of years, survival archery was the only thing that helped man provide for his family and defend his lands.

In today’s modern world, using a simple bow and arrow might seem useless and obsolete. After all, we have an incredible variety of guns that would do a much better job, than a simple bow or crossbow.

That might be true, but in a post SHTF world, a bow and arrow are a must-have weapon if you want to survive. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to convince you to give up your lead throwers and stick with just a bow and arrow.

Guns have their place in a doomed world, but there will be times when survival archery will have an advantage over firearms.

Whether you need to be completely silent, have run out of ammo or simply need to send a line over a high tree branch, it is nice to have a tool available that can do all these things and even more.

For most of the readers, their first encounter with a bow and arrow was probably during summer camp and it most certainly didn’t include extended lessons that would improve one’s archery skills.

Survival Archery as Plan B

When given the choice of only carrying one weapon, let’s say the Glock 19 or a compact crossbow, I bet that many of the readers will choose the pistol in the blink of an eye. And they’re not wrong, given that choice; I would probably do the same thing.

However, one knows that emergency preparedness and long-term survival is about always having a plan B. You have a backup plan already and most of us have even a backup for our initial backup.

Having access to a bow and a good variety of arrows is a great alternative means of hunting and defense.

I don’t want to get into a debate about the pros and cons of survival archery. I think it is better if we explore the advantages of knowing how to launch projectiles down range without making noise and why a bow (regardless its configuration) should be included in your arsenal.

This amazing hunting and survival tool is strong enough to take down anything from rabbit to whitetail with pinpoint accuracy.

If you remember summer camp, you should probably remember that archery is a good way to get kids involved in developing their concentration and aiming skills.

Survival archery is a good way to get your kids involved in emergency preparedness and with the right lessons, kids will learn how to contribute to the defense or the hunting needs of your family. Not to mention that it is a great bonding experience and one of the few times when you can calmly discuss with them and teach the kids some discipline.

Survival archery requires commitment and you need to learn about the techniques and equipment options. The advantage is that you can practice survival archery even in suburban or urban surroundings without drawing attention to yourself.

You don’t have the same luxury when using a gun and in many jurisdictions, it is illegal to practice shooting in your backyard.

The bow and arrow were the first, true stealth weapon system and this characteristic will become useful in a world where you constantly need to stay under the radar. If you live in a suburban or urban environment and bugging out is not an option for you, keeping a low sonic profile is vital.

After you outlast the first waves of causalities, you will need to defend your home ground or catch your next meal without making a noise. Survival archery will be your main option and it will make sure you keep your base camp protected and your plate full.

If the world will go off the grid tomorrow, you will need to compete with whole groups of starving, unprepared and angry people. Going hunting with a firearm when there is so much competition around is not a good idea, not unless you want to share your prize.

Using a bow and arrow will ensure a stealthy takedown and you will be able to return to your base camp without attracting any hostiles.

Survival Archery More Than Meets the Eye

When discussing survival archery, one must understand that it is not a skill that can be used only for hunting and defensive or offensive tactics. Survival archery is about versatility and about how one can use a bow and arrow under various circumstances.

A bow is a versatile tool that can be easily carried (especially if you have a takedown recurve bow that can be broken down into pieces) and it will never run out of ammo.

It was the first flamethrower, and using a bow and flaming arrow was not only a war tactic. It was also used as a signal to reach others when in need.

Suggested reading: How to signal for help in the wilderness

You can also attach a string to an arrow and shoot it over a high limb or a gap. It will help you get a rope out farther than you can throw it by hand.

Attaching a string to an arrow is also a good method of fishing and with a little practice, you will be able to procure dinner.

Bows have a wide variety of purposes and there are many configurations that one can use. This is why you will always find debates about which calibers are best for survival archery, what type of arrows you should use in a post SHTF world and other such topics.

I think that it’s a matter of personal preference and it all depends on what you are comfortable with and what you needed it for.

Primitive history shows how archery bow and arrows were once the go-to weapons of our ancestors. While crossbows and archery are only more popular today because of pop culture, survivalists include bows and arrows in their arsenal for long now.

Now you know, with practice, you can depend on archery for self-defense and for hunting. So take some archery lessons now and improve your archery shooting techniques because you never know when they might come in handy.

In addition to self-defense, weapons can be used for hunting, which could be crucial is certain scenarios. In fact, not having weapons as part of your preparation (or not being trained in the use of your weapons) means your chances of dying in a serious disaster will be higher.

This article will serve as the ultimate list of survival weapons that you should consider getting for your arsenal, including both firearms and non-firearms. Without any further ado, let’s dive right in.

Firearms

Firearms On Table Follow Me on Pinterest

Firearms On Table Follow Me on Pinterest

Here is a list of the primary firearms that you should consider having in your survival arsenal:

.22 Rifle

A .22 rifle can be used for casual plinking, small game hunting, pest control, general homestead use, and even defense in a survival situation.

There’s an old saying that no gun collection is truly complete without a .22 rifle, and it’s absolutely true. Out of all of the firearms on this list, the .22 is the one that is the most often underestimated.

Examples of .22 semi-automatic rifles you can buy include the Marlin Model 60 and the Ruger 10/22. Here’s a list of the best survival rifles to have after SHTF.

Shotgun

A twelve or twenty gauge pump action shotgun will without question be one of the most effective self-defense weapons you can own.

Another valuable reason to own a shotgun is because of the versatility of ammunition. While buckshot can be used effectively for defense at relatively close range, birdshot is effective for bird and small game hunting, while slugs can be used for big game hunting within reasonable distances.

Examples of shotguns in this category include the Mossberg 500, Remington 870, and Winchester SXP.

Handgun

While a handgun should never be treated as a primary weapon (use a rifle or a shotgun for that), it is without question a very valuable backup weapon and something you can have on your person at all times (and have concealed).

The best type of handgun to use will be a mid-sized 9mm pistol that has a large magazine capacity while also being fairly easy to conceal. Examples of pistols in this category include the CZ P10C, the Glock 19, the Smith & Wesson M&P9 2.0 Compact, and the Walther PPQ.

If you opt for a revolver for simpler operation, make sure you get a model chambered for .357 Magnum, as you can also shoot .38 Specials to increase its versatility. Examples of full size .357 revolvers that would be good options include the Ruger GP100, the Smith & Wesson 686, and the Taurus Model 66.

Defensive Rifle

A defensive semi-automatic rifle chambered in an intermediate caliber such as 5.56 will be an excellent option for defending yourself and your home from multiple attackers. It can also be used for hunting mid-sized game such as deer or wild hogs as well.

Examples of rifles in this category include the AR-15, AK-47, and Ruger Mini-14.

Long-Range Rifle

Last but not least, a long range rifle chambered in a larger caliber such as .308 or .30-06 or something similar will be an effective firearm for big game hunting and anti-personnel use at long distances.

You can go with semi-automatic rifles such as the AR-10 or the Springfield M1A, or bolt action options include the Mossberg Patriot, Remington Model 700, Ruger American, Ruger Model 77 Hawkeye, and the Winchester Model 70.

Sharp Weapons

Sharp Weapons Assorted Follow Me on Pinterest

Sharp Weapons Assorted Follow Me on Pinterest

Here are the primary sharp weapons that you will need to have in a survival situation:

Ax

You ought to have an ax anyway so you can chop firewood in the winter. It’s also useful for breaking up ice, field dressing animals, and cutting up branches and foliage so you can build a shelter. But as a weapon, an ax is particularly deadly.

Knife

This is perhaps the most basic and important (if also obvious) survival weapon to have. But rather than just having a flimsy Swiss Army knife, you need to have a folding tactical knife that you can keep clipped to the inside of your pocket, as well as a larger fixed blade tactical knife such as the KA-BAR.

A knife can be a more effective defensive weapon than a gun at extremely close range, and it also fulfills a litany of other uses as well.

Kubotan

The Kubotan is a keychain self-defense weapon that has been around since the 1960s. It’s typically around five inches in length and half an inch in diameter, giving it the approximate size of a pen.

Kubotans can either have a sharp edge to punch holes in an attacker much like a tactical pen, or they can be used as blunt weapons. The best aspect about Kubotans is they can be easily concealed on your person.

Machete

The machete is thought of more as a utilitarian tool than as a weapon, but the truth is that it fits both roles very well. A machete can actually be even more effective than a knife for defense because it can help to keep an opponent at bay (not to mention that it can do a lot more damage).

Spear

Another weapon that can be very effective at keeping an opponent at bay is the spear. Simply tying a knife to the end of a pole with paracord or vine can make for a good defensive spear, but other spears you can make include a pointed spear (simply by sharpening the end of a pole and then fire hardening it) and a pronged spear (by taking a thicker pole and splitting the end into four or so prongs).

The pronged spear, besides being an effective defensive weapon, can also be used for effective fishing.

Tactical Pen

The tactical pen is without question one of the most overlooked defensive tools around today. A tactical pen is simply an ordinary pen encased in a durable metal housing and with a pointed end that will allow you to punch holes in an opponent.

One of the best things about a tactical pen is how innocent looking it looks and the fact that it does not draw attention to itself as a weapon (unlike a knife). And while you can technically use any pen as a weapon if you want to, there’s no question that a true tactical pen is much better suited to the task.

Right now, Ape Survival is giving away tactical pens in exchange for joining their newsletter. All you have to pay is the cost of shipping. See below:

Tomahawk

The tomahawk is simply a hatchet-like ax that is designed primarily for fighting. The tomahawks of today are very sharp and well-built, and also often have a knife-like pointed end on the opposite side, giving you essentially two weapons in one.

A tomahawk, like a normal hatchet, will also serve you with a number of important utilitarian purposes, such as being able to chop through wood or ice.

Close-Range Weapons

Close Range Weapons Flail Follow Me on Pinterest

Close Range Weapons Flail Follow Me on Pinterest

Here are the top blunt weapons that you should consider having in your arsenal:

Baseball Bat

The baseball bat can deliver a killing blow if you swing hard enough at an assailant’s head, and driving a nail through the end of it would double its effectiveness as well (as cliche as it may sound).

A durable metal bat would be a superior choice to a wooden option.

Belt

A belt is an example of an everyday item that can be used as a very effective defensive weapon that also gives you plenty of reach. If you sharpen the buckle, it will become even more effective and perhaps even lethal as a defensive tool. You can also use the belt to tie up an assailant after you have managed to subdue them, which gives it more uses than one.

Or you could just get a knife belt (a belt with a built-in knife). As with the tactical pen mentioned above, all you pay for the knife belt is the cost of shipping. See below:
Knife BeltKnife Belt

Brass Knuckles

Brass knuckles are designed to simply increase your effectiveness significantly in a fist. Needless to say, being struck with brass knuckles is going to hurt a lot more than being struck with bare fists, not to mention that (with a hard enough blow), it can even break or severely damage one’s jaw.

Another benefit to brass knuckles is their lightweight and compact size, and you can easily carry them around in your pocket.

Cane

As with the belt, the cane is another everyday object that can be used defensively, although to get away with it inconspicuously, you would probably need to pretend to either have a limp (assuming you don’t have a real limp yourself) or be of a more advanced age.

But even if you don’t need to use (or pretend to use) a cane in your daily life, having one close by wouldn’t be a bad idea. Just make sure that the cane is a more durable model that can sustain a lot of abuse.

Club

The club is perhaps the most primitive of all weapons ever devised by man, and if you think about it, you can use almost any hard object as a club-like weapon if you have to.

But regardless of whether you want to use a primitive club (such as a rock tied tightly to a stick) or more modern options such as batons, there’s no denying that a club can deal a lot of physical damage.

Flail

The flail is perhaps the most medieval out of all of the weapons in this list: basically, it’s a two-handed handle attached to a chain which is attached to a spiked ball, at least traditionally speaking.

Today, you could construct a flail out of everyday objects: simply taking multiple grocery bags and then placing rocks in them before wrapping them shut would count as a makeshift flail, for example.

Hammer

The classic hammer can be a very effective weapon for defense and can incapacitate or even kill an attacking person with a single hard blow to the head. What more needs to be said?

Mace

I’m not talking about Mace brand pepper spray, but actual an actual mace. Basically, it’s a heavy club that has a metal head with spikes on one end. You see maces in movies set in medieval times, but you can still buy them today. They will do just as much damage as a flail, but they are easier to use.

Monkey Fist Knot

The monkey fist knot, also known as the Sailor Fist Knot, was originally designed by sailors as a way to strike an opponent without getting extremely up close.

Basically, the monkey fist knot is a rope or a string with the end rolled into a ball. The idea is that you can swing the ball in the air before delivering a blow to your assailant. Here’s a more detailed explanation.

Stun Gun

The terms ‘stun gun’ and ‘taser’ are often used interchangeably, when in reality they are two completely different weapons. A stun gun requires direct contact with your attacker in order to work, whereas a taser works from a distance.

Basically, a stun gun has at least two prongs attached to the end that can deliver an electric shock to an attacker. Both of the prongs should have electricity between them that cannot be visibly seen.

Umbrella

A good alternative to the cane is an umbrella. In fact, there are some umbrellas that are designed specifically for self-defense and not to break upon impact with an assailant, while still maintaining the look and weight of a normal umbrella (defensive umbrellas are usually built out of fiberglass).

While not the best offensive weapon, an umbrella can still be an excellent choice for protecting yourself from an attacker.

Distance Weapons

Here are some distance weapons that you should consider putting in your survival arsenal:

Bear Spray

Many people often confuse bear spray and pepper spray as being the same thing, but they’re a little different. Both bear spray and pepper spray contain oleoresin capsicum as their main ingredient, but bear spray has a much smaller concentration (around 10-15% less). The reason for this lesser concentration is because it is designed to irritate bears and get them to stop attacking you rather than actually hurt them.

Bear spray should be used primarily for bears and not for humans because it is not as effective as pepper spray. That being said, it certainly can be used for self-defense against humans if necessary.

Bola

The bola is a throwing weapon consisting of two weights on the ends of a cord. You then twirl the weights above your head before throwing them to trip and perhaps even injure an attacker (even though it should be noted that bolas were originally used for hunting or to capture wild game).

Bow And Arrow

The classic bow and arrow is a long distance weapon that can be used for both self-defense and for hunting. You have options from compound bow to recurve bows.

Just take note that becoming proficient with a bow and arrow is going to require a lot of practice (probably even more so than a firearm), so be prepared to invest a lot of time into learning and mastering it. Here is our guide to survival bows.

Crossbow

An alternative to the bow and arrow is a crossbow. As with the bow and arrow, the crossbow can be used for both hunting and self-defense. A big advantage to the crossbow is that it can be easier to learn and use than the more traditional bow and arrow.

Pepper Spray

If pepper spray is powerful enough to keep bears off of you, then it can certainly serve the same role against people as well. Pepper spray is designed so that an assailant’s eyes will swell and then close. Besides temporarily blinding and disorienting them, it also causes a lot of pain that they will almost certainly react to, hopefully giving yourself enough time to get away.

That’s also not to mention that pepper spray is very cost effective and is usually less than twenty dollars a can. Just be careful not to be downwind when you spray it, or else you can get some in your own face rather than your attacker’s.

Sling

A more primitive version of the slingshot is the sling. Basically, a hand sling is just two strings attached to a piece of fabric or canvas or leather, in which a small rock is held. You then twirl the rock above your head before letting loose.

Slings require a great deal of more practice than slingshots in order to master, but they can be used defensively if need be. Here is some information about the shepherd’s sling.

Slingshot

The slingshot is without question one of the most underestimated and overlooked weapons on the planet, for both hunting and defense. One of the best things about the slingshot is that ammunition for it is universal and literally everywhere. If you’re anywhere with pebbles or small stones on the ground, you have ammo.

Becoming accurate with a slingshot will take a lot of practice, but it can be accurate and powerful enough to bring down small game and also to temporarily stop an attacker (aim for the face). Here is an article about using slingshots for survival.

Taser

The main difference between a taser and a stun gun is that taser is designed to shoot probes, connected to wires, at your target. The probes can penetrate through clothing (and sometimes even skin) and then emit an electrical current that will shock your attacker.

Obviously, the primary benefit to using a taser over a stun gun is that you can (hopefully) stop your attacker before they get to you.

Throwing Stars

You don’t have to be a ninja to learn how to use throwing stars. Also known as ‘shurikens,’ throwing stars will have anywhere from three to eight sharped tips, each of which is capable of slicing through skin and flesh.

Throwing stars can be very effective at stopping or at least wounding an attacker before they get to you, but they also require a lot of practice and training in order to master.

Conclusion

We’ve covered a lot of weapons here, but don’t worry. You’re not doing anything wrong if you don’t have each and every one of these weapons in your arsenal. And it’s not like you’re going to be pack all of these weapons on you at once either.

That being said, each of these weapons fulfills a very unique and specific purpose and should prove valuable when the grid goes down. To begin accumulating these weapons if you haven’t already, you can make a list of what you feel are the most important ones to have, and then work your way from there.
