When you think of attracting a super-pollinating machine to your backyard garden, you probably don’t instantly think of the mason bee. Most people think of the honeybee instead. But there is good reason for making your property attractive to the mason bee.

For starters, they are much better pollinators than the honeybee. For example, an orchard can be pollinated by only 250 mason bees – compared to needing 50,000 honeybees. And, because mason bees have a limited range of only about 300 feet, they are ideal for backyard gardens.

Mason bees, in fact, are about 200 times more efficient in pollinating than honeybees.

So, What Is a Mason Bee?

The mason bee is a solitary bee that is slightly smaller than the honeybee, and it commonly has a blue-black sheen that can make it mistakable for a housefly. There are 140 species of this insect which are native to North America, as well as about 70 species native to Europe and Asia.

Also called orchard bees, mud bees or twig bees, these insects do not build their own nests but rather search out narrow tunnels left behind by wood boring insects in the bark of trees or hollow stems in which they can lay their eggs. They then seal the eggs inside the hole with mud. They also can live in homemade mason bee houses (which will be discussed in a moment).

Although they do not live in colonies like honeybees do, mason bees do like to make their nests in clusters. And while they do have the ability to sting like any other bee, the absence of a queen to protect makes them a gentle and non-aggressive insect.

The Secret of Their (Pollinating) Success

So perhaps you are wondering what makes the humble mason bee such a powerhouse when it comes to pollinating. The answer lies in its lack of precision.

When a honeybee visits blossoms, it does so in a very methodical way, going from one flower to the next. It is so precise in filling up its pollen sacks that very little if any pollen comes into contact with the sides of the flower. By some estimates, a single honeybee will only pollinate about 5 percent of the blooms it comes in contact with.

By contrast, mason bees tend to be much messier in collecting their pollen. They do not have pollen sacks but rather, they make use of special hairs on their abdomen called scopa. These insects crawl over ever part of the flower, dropping quite a bit of pollen in the process. Their flight patterns are also more erratic. Instead of moving from one blossom to the next in an organized fashion, they will zigzag back and forth from tree to tree, meaning a much better chance for cross pollination. An individual mason bee can visit as many as 2,400 blossoms in a single day and pollinate 90 percent of them!

How to Attract Mason Bees

Although there are companies that sell mason bee cocoons, attracting these insects to your property is fairly simple.

  • Have a place for them to nest. Since mason bees do not build their own nests, they need to be provided with tunnels. This can be done by leaving dead trees standing or by creating your own mason bee house. The simplest way to make your bee house is to take a block of untreated wood and drill a series of one-fourth-inch holes, but you can also use several small rolls of cardboard or paper as well, which will allow you to harvest the cocoons at the end of the season. Place the house in an area that gets morning sun.
  • Provide them with clay. Mason bees make mud walls in their nests, but typical garden soil has very little clay and too much organic matter for them to use. If you don’t have an area on your property with access to moist clay soil, you can provide “mud pies” for mason bees looking to move in. In fact, making mud pies with your children is a great lead-in to teach them about these gentle bees.
  • Give them water. Having easily accessible water helps mason bees to lay more eggs. A shallow dish of water filled with a few rocks (for the bees to land) placed outside is all that that is needed. Eggs are laid in early spring, so if you do it then you won’t have to be concerned about mosquitoes.
  • Give them food. Mason bees require pollen, so it’s important to make sure that you have enough pollen-producing plants on your property — plenty of flowers, blossoming fruits and vegetable plants.
  • Give them protection. If you have decided to build a bee house and are successful in attracting mason bees, the holes in your bee house will become plugged up by mud. Young bees will hibernate through the winter but will be very vulnerable to predators such as woodpeckers, squirrels and ants. By late fall, you should gently move the bee house into an unheated garage or shed. If you have a style of house that can be cleaned, then gently harvest the cocoons and get rid of any mites. Harvested bees can be kept in a Ziploc bag in an unheated area until it is time for them to be released (in early spring when blossoms are about 25 percent out).
  • Don’t poison them! If you are trying to attract mason bees, don’t use pesticides!

In uncertain times, having a plan allows us to have a sense of security knowing essential details are covered. Whether the plan is designed to include the bare bones necessary for immediate survival or is intended to span years, every plan should include some measure of stockpiling.

Stockpiling, or accumulating a large quantity of goods, may often be viewed by onlookers as paranoia, especially in light of reality shows that highlight extreme shopping, but stockpiling is simply a wise practice for anyone when it is included as a part of life.

Homesteaders, of course, know that each year brings new challenges, with disease, drought and other disasters having a major impact on the homestead’s production. Having a stockpile to rely on in tight times, or when faced with difficult circumstances, is essential.

New homesteaders naturally will start accumulating foods and other goods that are routinely needed on the property. For homesteaders, maintaining a stockpile of goods becomes part of everyday life.

The Basics

Food stockpileThere are at least three key areas to consider when starting a stockpile for your homestead.

1. Space and location

What areas can be used for storage: both long and short term? Cool, dry rooms are traditionally thought of as the best areas because they reduce loss due to moisture, but other areas should not be overlooked. It depends what you’re stockpiling. Choose carefully for your intended location. If the electricity fails during heavy rains, could your stockpile be ruined in a flooded basement?

2. Containers and shelves

What about shelving, totes, boxes and other storage containers? But consider carefully the materials, especially plastics which have the potential to leach harmful chemicals into the stored goods. All shelving should allow the stock to be rotated easily to reduce waste.

3. Stockpile but don’t waste

Estimate the needs of those on the homestead. Only store what can be reasonably used before foodstuffs and medications expire, or other materials deteriorate. This may be as simple as marking the date you open a new bottle or jar, and recording the date it is completely used up for an entire month in a small notebook. Then calculate to find the amount used each year.

Only stockpile foods that are of good quality, or that are known to work well for the household. Many have stocked up on high-quality foods that were wasted, because no one ate them.

Perhaps the easiest way to start a stockpile is to set aside a specific amount in the household budget each month to put toward stockpile goods. With as little as $5 a week or even a month, a small accumulation will begin. This amount should be used to buy items that are not produced on the homestead. For those who want a large supply quickly, a fair amount of cash and a well-written plan can make it happen.

The Pentagon’s $40 billion anti-missile defense system is incapable of protecting American cities from an attack, according to a new report by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

“The story of this system is a cautionary tale about how the lack of appropriate oversight of a politically charged missile defense program has led to a system in tatters,” the report, written by physicists Laura Grego, David Wright and George N. Lewis alleged. It was first reported by the Los Angeles Times. “Despite more than a decade of development and a bill of $40 billion, the GMD [Ground-based Midcourse Defense] system is simply unable to protect the U.S. public.

The GMD consists of rockets that are designed to be able to hit and knock out incoming nuclear missiles. Its purpose is to protect America cities from smaller nuclear-armed powers, such as North Korea.

In theory, missiles from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County, California, and Ft. Greely, Alaska would launch and intercept a missile from North Korea or elsewhere. But in the seven most recent tests, there were only three successes, the Times reported. And those tests were “heavily scripted” and “set up for success.”

“Repeatedly,” the report said, “the Pentagon has sacrificed quality, shortened engineering cycles and sidestepped acquisitions best practices to meet a deadline imposed by political rationales rather than technical realities.”

Honey-Cinnamon Apricot Jam – Low Sugar, No Artificial Anything

Honey-Cinnamon Apricot Jam is lightly sweetened with honey and flavored with a hint of cinnamon and citrus so you can taste the fruit, not the sugar.

Apricot jam is a great way to use up any apricots with bumps, bruises or bird pecks. Our gardening zone is right on the edge of where it’s “safe” to grow apricots, so our crop often gets nipped by a late frost. When we get a harvest, I don’t want any of them to go to waste!

I sweetened this jam with local honey that I buy in bulk, but you could also use granulated cane sugar. (See note below.) I used Pomona’s Pectin for thickening, but you could substitute another low sugar pectin and adjust the recipe accordingly. I found out the first time I made this jam that our apricots have a plethora of small, wiry hairs around the pit that become more pronounced in jam, so now I use the food strainer to process our apricots into a puree instead of chopping and mashing them. This may be an issue only with northern hardy varieties – I’m not sure. Use your judgment to decide how you’d like the texture of your jam.

To make apricot puree – pit apricots, place in heavy bottomed stock pot.

Honey-Cinnamon Apricot Jam is lightly sweetened with honey and flavored with a hint of cinnamon and citrus so you can taste the fruit, not the sugar.

Cover and cook gently until tender. Process through a food strainer or food mill.

Low Sugar Honey-Cinnamon Apricot Jam

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of chopped/mashed apricots or apricot puree
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 teaspoons calcium water (included with Pomona’s Pectin)
  • 1 cup honey or 2 cups sugar
  • 3 teaspoons Pomona’s Pectin powder

Directions:

Sterilize six 8-ounce jars, keep hot. Heat lids and rings in hot water, keep warm but not boiling. Fill water bath canner and bring to boil.

In a small bowl, mix together honey and pectin powder. Don’t skip this step, or your pectin will clump. Set aside.

In a large, non-reactive pot (I use a heavy bottom stainless steel pot), combine apricots, lemon juice, cinnamon and the calcium water. Bring to a full boil.

Honey-Cinnamon Apricot Jam is lightly sweetened with honey and flavored with a hint of cinnamon and citrus so you can taste the fruit, not the sugar.

Add honey-pectin mixture, stir vigorously 1-2 minutes while cooking to dissolve pectin. Return to boil and remove from heat.

Ladle jam into sterilized jars leaving 1/4″ headspace. Wipe rims clean and screw on the lids. Process for 10 minutes in water bath canner (add 1 minute for every 1,000 feet above sea level). Jam will last about three weeks once opened. Makes around 5-6 cups. Recipe may be doubled.

I really like making jams and jellies with Pomona’s Pectin, as most conventional jam and jelly recipes call for as much or more sugar than fruit. The low sugar jams and jellies taste like fruit instead of sugar. Pomona’s Pectin also came out with a new recipe book recently, which I have not tried yet, but it looks interesting. It’s called, “Preserving with Pomona’s Pectin: The Revolutionary Low-Sugar, High-Flavor Method for Crafting and Canning Jams, Jellies, Conserves, and More“.

A Note About Sugar

Using granulated sugar will change the flavor. I do check and make sure the label says, “cane sugar”, as most granulated sugar in the U.S. is now made from genetically modified (RoundUp Ready) sugar beets. Buy in bulk and watch for sales. Sugar will keep indefinitely in an airtight container. It is a good food preservative because it ties up free water in the product, preventing bacteria from breeding. It also helps preserve color and texture, keeping fruit bright and firm. In a pinch, sugar and honey can also be used for the care of open wounds.

3. Controlling the water

If rain runoff or other flowing water is affecting your property, consider diverting the flow. There are a few techniques to consider that will stop the water before it reaches your soil beds. One of these is rain barrels: Catch water in barrels placed upslope for later use in the garden. You could also create a rain garden upslope from your main plot by planting across the flow of runoff; the plantings will absorb and divert water. For a more involved version of the same idea, you can build a berm (or small hill) covered with plantings in the path of the water, using the raised area to shield your soil beds. Lastly, consider controlling the flow of water with a swale running downslope or buried rocks or gravel channeling water away from your garden.

Heat stroke kills more people than hurricanes, tornadoes and floods. Protect yourself and your family by learning symptoms, prevention and treatment.

Heat stroke (also known as sunstroke) is the most serious form of heat injury and can be deadly. The CDC states that, “On average, 675 people die from complications related to extreme heat each year in the United States – more than tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, lightning or any other weather event combined.”

These deaths are all 100% preventable, yet every year we lose hundreds of lives to sunstroke when we didn’t have to lose one.

Why do we lose so many victims? I believe it is from lack of education. We need to know the symptoms of heat stroke, who’s most at risk, prevention and treatment options.

What is Heat Stroke?

Heat stroke is a condition marked by fever and often by unconsciousness, caused by failure of the body’s temperature-regulating mechanism when exposed to excessively high temperatures.

Heat Stroke Symptoms

  • Body temperature over 104ºF (40ºC)
  • Headache
  • Rapid breathing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Nausea (with or without vomiting)
  • Flushed – red faced
  • Muscle cramps (also a sign of dehydration)
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Lack of sweating despite the heat

5 Heat Stroke Risk Factors

According to the Mayo Clinic, anyone can develop heat stroke but there are several factors that will put you at greater risk such as:

  1. Age – The very young and those who are over 65 whose bodies central nervous systems are either not fully developed or are deteriorating
  2. Exertion in hot weather – Working in the fields, tilling the garden, playing sports, and construction can easily lead to heat stroke
  3. Sudden exposure to hot weather – Going from one extreme to the other (cold to hot) can increase your risk of heat stroke
  4. MedicationsBlood pressure, beta blockers, eczema, antidepressants and more can increase your risk for heat stroke (and possibly sunburn)
  5. Health Conditions – Weakened immune systems, disease and even weight can increase your risk for heat stroke

Heat Stroke Treatments

At the first sign of suspected stroke, Call 911. Any delay in treatment could result in death. Please be careful!

The operator may be able to guide you through first aid until paramedics arrive on the scene. If you are unable to contact an emergency worker, it is important to try to lower the person’s core temperature. Heat stroke can cause brain damage and organ failure. The quicker you can lower the core temperature, the better the chance the patient has at survival.

  • Move person to a shaded area, preferably in air conditioning
  • Apply cool, wet cloths all over their skin. Rinse cloths under cold water, ring out and place on skin.
  • Fan air over patient by turning fan on and placing it close to the person.
  • Apply ice packs on the hot spots: armpits, groin, neck and head.
  • Take temperature and try to lower their temp below 102ºF (39ºC)
  • If the temperature does not come down, you can place patient in an ice bath in the tub.

4 Tips for Heat Stroke Prevention

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

  • Avoid the heat from 2-4 pm. 3 pm is the hottest part of the day. If you have to work outside get your work done before noon or after 4 pm.
  • Never stay in a parked car or leave anyone (including pets) in a car during the summer, even for 5 minutes.
  • Take it easy. Don’t do too much in the heat or overexert yourself and take lots of water breaks.
  • Stay hydrated. Most heatstroke victims are accompanied by dehydration. Avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks or drinks high in sodium.

If you must work in extreme temperatures for an extended period of time, you may want to consider a cooling vest for industrial use or cooling vest with rechargeable inserts.

They rummage through trash cans, creating a huge mess which can, in turn, attract other animals and insects in the process.

Other issues with raccoons in rural areas: they are a predator to chickens and they wreak havoc in vegetable gardens. Dealing with a raccoon infestation can be a very frustrating situation!

In my research, I came across 6 ways to naturally deter these pesky critters. Also, I will share tips on steps you can take to help keep them away for good!

1. Cayenne Pepper Spray to Protect Your Garden

Cayenne pepper is a great way to repel raccoons. These pesky rodents hate the smell of cayenne. Therefore, cayenne repellent spray is a very effective solution.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 small canister of cayenne pepper
  • 1 bottle of hot sauce
  • 1 gallon of water

Instructions:

  • Add 1 small canister of cayenne pepper and 1 bottle of hot sauce to 1 gallon of water.
  • Spray the solution all over your garden plants, bushes, and shrubs.
  • Reapply after rainfall.

2. Ammonia

Ammonia is another effective raccoon control solution.

How to use ammonia to deter raccoons:

  • Position several ammonia soaked rags near/around the entrances of the raccoon’s nest.
  • Spray ammonia around the places where raccoons have been spotted.
  • Sprinkle one cup of ammonia solution around the inside of each trash can.
  • Spray ammonia on the ground in the places to where raccoons are drawn.

3. Mothballs

Raccoons hate the odor of mothballs! Mothballs are commonly used by homeowners to get rid of raccoons in attics and/or crawlspaces. However, if mothballs are left in such places for long periods of time, the chemicals within mothballs can seep into the rest of your house, exposing people living there. Mothballs can be ingested by pets or even small children. Use this method with extreme caution!

4. Predator Urine

This deterrent method is meant to trick raccoons into thinking predators are nearby which will likely scare them away. This raccoon deterrent is readily available at most sporting goods stores and many online retailers. Look for urine from wolves, coyotes, bobcats or mountain lions, and use it around areas where raccoons are dwelling.

5. Another Method to Protect Your Garden: Epsom Salt

They do not like the smell of epsom salt. To deter raccoons using this method, sprinkle epsom salt around and inside your vegetable garden. The masked critters will avoid your garden altogether and most likely will not return. However, you will need to reapply every time it rains or after a couple of weeks with no rain.

You don’t need to make your chicken coop into a fortress to protect your chickens from raccoons, but it helps. Raccoons can open many latches, so use a latch you can padlock to keep the windows, doors, and other openings on your coop securely locked during evening and nighttime hours. Use a strong wire mesh with small openings that are no larger than 1/2 inch to keep raccoons from reaching into your coop or breaking through it. Put a roof on your coop and fasten it down tightly. If a raccoon can’t break into your coop easily, he will likely move on and not return.

Step 3: Add 5 cups marshmallows
